TRAINING UGANDAN TEACHERS

The training of Ugandan teachers is at the core of our work in Masindi. We have written and delivered training in literacy and numeracy and our focus now is on developing good practice in teaching and learning.

This was identified as a need by the District Education Authority and is also a current focus of the Ugandan government.

Our programme is designed to train groups of teachers who are selected by the District.
The teachers receive the training and a copy of the training manual we have written to accompany the course. The manual provides exemplar training sessions and additional materials which can be used by the trainees for dissemination in their own schools; in this way, they become ‘lead teachers’ themselves.

The whole programme lasts for one year:

· Selection of next cohort of teachers by District
· July – Visits by REDEARTH to schools of previous year’s cohort of trainees
~ Final two days of the year’s training for previous cohort
~ Visits to schools of new cohort
~ Intensive one week of training for new cohort
~ Provision of a manual for use in trainees’ schools
· August onwards
~ Trainees deliver the training programme in their own schools over the year, selecting their own priorities.
~ Trainees keep in contact with REDEARTH trainers via internet, providing reports and updates and using trainers as mentors.
~ Additional sessions are provided by a Co-ordinating Centre Tutor (CCT, similar to an Advisory Teacher in the UK).
· October
  ~ Monitoring visit by REDEARTH
· February or April
  ~ Monitoring visit by REDEARTH
· July
  ~ Programme repeated

The main principle that underpins this programme is the establishment of a steadily growing number of Ugandan teachers who will ultimately become lead-practitioners and thereby make it sustainable.

We hope and expect that such a group of teachers will deliver and support the training of their colleagues.

In the future, we also intend to provide additional CPD opportunities for these teachers and others once the REDEARTH Resource Centre is built.
This will then link with CPD opportunities for UK teachers who will lead training in areas of their expertise.
