REDEARTH EDUCATION Centre

How did we arrive at the decision to build it? We began our work in Uganda in the summer of 2003. The experience was profoundly important in helping us to understand the local context. We had many discussions with the Masindi District Education Officer, teachers, headteachers, inspectors, advisers and NGO’s involved in Education in Uganda.

A fundamental need that was identified by all these was for the training of teachers to enhance good practice in Teaching and Learning in Ugandan Schools. Indeed, continuous professional development (CPD) was, and remains, very rare for the thousands of teachers. This leaves them to teach classes of up to 300 children with access to neither resources nor training in the successful strategies and methods that have been evolving in the north.

If this training can be delivered to the teachers, it can improve the teaching and learning experience, making it more active and engaging for the children. This could reduce the enormous drop-out rate of the pupils and enhance the life chances of future generations of children
